Women are working in almost every field and why not in Construction. Quite a few brave have already made it as a choice in design, cost management, and centralized procurement. But very few at Project sites. Women can work at the site level as well and no other profession is better suited for them than Quantity Surveying. Following are some of the key facts explaining why it is better suited for women.

  1. It is a white-collared job in comparison with the other Construction jobs. There will be occasional site visits for joint measurement or any site-related reviews/scrutiny. Baring these site visits is an office-based job.
  2. Involvement of foreign Clients, Consultants Contractors, Megaprojects, etc. contributed to the construction of better site office facilities in general. Even the Indian companies started following those norms and some of the site offices are at par with the corporate office set up.
  3. Nowadays a lot of information technology is involved in construction as well like for planning and monitoring by software, ERP for procurement, Excel, and word for daily correspondence, biometric attendance, PowerPoint for presentation, AutoCAD for drawings and quantification etc. etc. So, except the site activities and are related to labor-management rest of the site office set up is almost like a small-scale IT office.
  4. The combination of IT, and better facilities at the site level has improved the outlook of the Construction sector and working conditions wherein women can feel safe and secure.
  5. QS is more of an office-based job and one can work from home as well at times as almost all working is done through computers using software and an online login facility. Remote working through computers is also possible with an occasional online connection.
  6. Women can make use of the above facility whenever they have restrictions/limitations, wherein they cannot attend office physically.
  7. QS is more of an analytical profession like the data analysts in IT and pathologists where women have benefits due to less physical strain.
  8. The jobs at Cost management consultants, Project management consultants, Client offices, Design consultants etc. are purely office-based jobs that are well suited for women wherein there will be hardly any physical stress/strain.
  9. The QS job also requires more soft skills and patience which men cannot handle as well as women can.
  10. It is already proven that women can communicate better, can co-ordinate better with multiple people/teams, better leaders, mentors, etc. which are very much essential for QS.
